The Baker University women’s cross country team finished in third place at the Mid-States Classic on Saturday, and the men’s team took 14th of 25 teams.

Senior Lauren Jaqua broke her own 5,000-meter run record, with a time of 17:57. The time earned her a fifth-place finish and her fourth Heart of America Athletic Conference Runner of the Week award of 2013. Senior Megan Rosa and junior Kerry Kurta joined Jaqua in the top 30.

“I think my race went really well, I improved my time by a couple seconds and felt pretty strong during it,” Kurta said.

Junior Vincent Tadokoro was the front runner on the men’s side, with a time of 26:31. Freshman Corey Matteson was the next to cross over the finish line for BU in 75th place.

“I feel good about my performance at the last meet, but I feel like I could have gone faster,” Matteson said.

The teams are currently training for the HAAC Championships on Nov. 9 in Marshall, Mo. The winner of each meet will have a chance to compete in the NAIA national championships on Nov. 23 in Lawrence.

“My expectation for our championship meet is definitely for us to win as a team so we can all compete together at the national meet,” Kurta said. “I hope each of us races to the best of our ability.”
