KNBU-FM, KNBU-TV receive awards

Baker University’s student television and radio stations, KNBU-TV and KNBU-FM, have been honored with awards from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

The six awards came from student work from the spring and fall of 2013.

“I think it’s a pretty great achievement to have won six awards collectively from both staffs, because it shows that we’ve been working really hard and trying to produce quality work, especially since we’ve had so many ups and downs with the department,” station manager Xiomara Nunez said.

The awards won were:

Radio Enterprise News Package: EJ Carter, “Gathright Chooses Gessner,” second place.

Radio Sports Play-by-Play: Brad Barnes,”Baker vs. Evangel,” second place.

Radio Dee Jay Personality: Jordan Honore, second place.

Television Complete Taped Newscast: KNBU-TV Staff, “Wildcat Watch,” second place.

Television Complete Sports Feature: Brad Barnes, “Baker Wrestling Places at Nationals,” second place.

Radio Sports Play-by-Play: Sean Webb, “Baker vs. Central Methodist,” honorable mention.

Nunez said the KNBU-FM awards come after a change in focus toward more community-related news coverage.

“For radio, we’ve tried to focus more on community things, so we’ve tried to include more community related pieces or pieces that are of community interest,” Nunez said.

As for KNBU-TV, the station transitioned from a televised station to have more of an online presence. However, Nunez said KNBU-TV will be going back to the traditional televised format.

“That’s really exciting seeing as the pieces that won awards are from when we were a regular news station,” Nunez said.
