The women’s soccer team won Friday afternoon at Avila University, 1-0. The team’s win streak now sits at three games in a row for the third time this season.

All-American senior defender Shelby Schiraldi scored the team’s lone goal in the eleventh minute of the game.

In the first 10 minutes, freshman Megan Johnson and junior Jenna Carducci both had shot opportunities. Johnson’s went wide and Avila’s freshman goalkeeper Shea Myer saved Carducci’s shot.

Then in the eleventh minute, Baker had a free kick from 40 yards out. Instead of playing for a cross, Schiraldi decided to put the shot on frame and test the keeper. Schiraldi’s shot beat everybody and found its way into the back of the net. The score was Schiraldi’s third goal of the season and fifth goal of her career, passing her previous season high of two goals.

The Baker attack continued to push into the second half. Avila didn’t budge to the four more shots from Schiraldi, two more from Carducci, and shots from senior Ashley Mauck, sophomore Taylor Baum, sophomore Jessica Hillebert and freshman Kara Doctor.

Senior goalkeeper Rachel Theobald earned her fifth shutout of the season and 16th of her career.

Baker’s record improves to 10-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in conference. The ‘Cats have two more games left to play before the conference tournament.

The Wildcats will match up with Missouri Valley College at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Liston Stadium. Missouri Valley and Baker have the same conference record, and a win for either team could give them the second-place spot in the final conference standings.
