Volleyball team improves to 11-9

After going 2-2 in the MidAmerica Nazarene Invitational over the weekend, the volleyball team defeated Benedictine in a conference road match on Tuesday. This brings the Wildcats’ overall record to 11-9. They are 2-2 in conference play.

On the first day of the MNU tournament Baker beat Lindenwood-Belleville, 27-25, 25-21, 25-19 and Haskell University, 25-15, 28-26, 21-25, 25-20.

Against Lindenwood-Belleville, Kadie Baumgardner and Jenna Sackman led the defense with 18 and 13 digs, respectively. Danielle French had 8 kills and Natalie Minchow added 7 to give the Baker offense the upper hand in the match.

In the Haskell matchup, Minchow and Kailin Cordes provided the ‘Cats with 11 kills each and Olivia Brees and Haleigh Offield each had 7. The overall team hitting percentage for the match was .225 while Haskell’s was only .177.

In the second day of the tournament, Baker lost to both Ottawa University, 18-25, 25-21, 13-25, 26-24, 7-15 and William Woods University, 24-26, 25-16, 21-25, 11-25.

In the closest match of the tournament for Baker, emotions ran high as both teams went back and forth. Earlier in September, the ‘Cats took on Ottawa and lost in five sets as well with nearly identical scores.

Against William Woods, Baumgardner led again with 23 digs followed by Sackman with 11 and Britney Diehm with 10, however it was not enough for William Woods’ offensive effort. Four William Woods’ players had 11 or more kills and setter Brittney Engelbrecht had 60 assists.

In the Benedictine matchup, the ‘Cats swept the Ravens in three sets, 25-19, 25-18, 26-24. Cordes led the attack with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Baumgardner had 26 digs.

The Wildcats will take on conference opponent Graceland University on Oct. 6 in Lamoni, Iowa.
