Juniors Chloe Mercer and Kelley Jenkins went to Haiti during interterm, but their interest didn’t end with the trip.

The thought of Haiti lingered, so they enrolled in the Race and Ethnicity class taught by Jacob Bucher, assistant professor of sociology.

The class gives students an option between writing a 10-page paper or doing a project that would be the equivalent to the paper.

“After we found out about the project, we immediately knew we wanted to incorporate Haiti into our project,” Mercer said.

Mercer and Jenkins decided to bring awareness of poverty in Haiti and raise money on campus to send back to the organization the students worked for in January.

To raise awareness and collect donations, Mercer and Jenkins hosted a Haiti Education Forum Sunday in Harter Union Lobby.

“We had a speaker who was born in Haiti and then moved to the U.S. talk about the differences between education here and education in Haiti,” Mercer said. “A couple students that went on the trip to Haiti with us in January also talked about their experience.”

There were around 20 students who attended the forum.

Jenkins and Mercer are still collecting donations at the Kwik Shop, Taco Bell, the Baldwin City Market and Mr. Goodcents.
