I have created this blog with the hope that there are students out there like me, who in the chaos of school and work, still find time to stumble upon new music while randomly roaming the interweb.
Thus begins my story. A few years ago -– back when YouTube was filled more with cat videos and less with Webstars -–I was wasting time, yet again, searching for the hot video of the week — I believe at the time it was the “Evolution of Dance.” Deciding upon the word “elephant” to type into my search bar, I belligerently pressed the enter key as I always had done. The result of this search began my trek to discover new, great music (mostly of the indie genre), and share it with the wonderful citizens of planet earth.
As the results of my search began to pop onto the screen, I noticed that one video wasn’t like the others. Most of the time when you type “elephant” into YouTube, you get what you’d expect, such as cute baby elephants and safari type documentaries, but when I scrolled down the page I noticed a video titled “Elephant Parade: Thirteen Things.” Clicking on the link, I knew that I would either get a video of a group of elephants smashing stuff, or I would hear some half-witted “musician” sing about the sun and the grass and other hippy-dippy things.
Nevertheless, I clicked on the video, and what I heard surprised me. I actually enjoyed this stuff. The song was very simple, acoustic, with a male singer serenely telling his story. It was absolutely fantastic, and I haven’t gone back to the Top 40 since.
Now, if this type of music really isn’t your thing, don’t fret. I assure you that there will be at least one indie artist you will discover that will be to your fancy.
