I admittedly am not always the biggest fan of female vocalists. So whenever I do find one that I thoroughly enjoy, it’s a pretty big deal.
When I first heard about St. Vincent, I was a little bit skeptical. Because I had never particularly enjoyed the sort of breathy-yet-harsh singing for which she is famous, I just sort of assumed that I wouldn’t like it at all.
But I was very, very wrong.
St. Vincent is not only a great vocalist, but she’s an incredibly talented guitarist as well. The funny thing is that it’s not even her guitar playing that makes her so great. It’s the fact that she doesn’t overdo it.
She could, potentially, just be another girl sitting in a coffee shop with an acoustic guitar singing about her problems. Eventually, this would become very repetitive and she would most likely end up being like every other aspiring musician that’s out there.
St. Vincent provides vocals that are kind of a unique blend of Bjork if she had the angst of a young Cat Power. Not only that, she does the nearly-impossible by mixing traditional alt rock with electronic music.
For this blog, I’ve included the song "Marrow" from the album ActorActor..Actor.
