Lumberyard Arts Center to host renowned artist

Story by Jessica Lane

The Lumberyard Arts Center will host internationally known artist Steven Graber from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 25.

Graber is a Newton native but currently resides in Vinland. He does a variety of artwork from charcoal to mixed media. Charcoal is a type of painting that is mostly black and white and allows the painting to appear realistic. Mixed media is focused more on texture and color and tends to have a center focal point.

“His work is just so spectacular,” Gallery Coordinator Sandy Cardens said.

Cardens has been hosting exhibits in the Lumberyard Arts Center since March 2010. The center is strictly volunteer.

The center looks for a variety of art to hold in the exhibits. Artists like Paul Johnson, Jim Sallenbach and Melinda Hipple, Zeta Chi fraternity house mother, have had their work displayed at the Lumberyard Arts Center.

Cardens said the center does not look for artists, but the artists find them.

While the artists benefit from having their work on display, the center does as well. For every piece sold, the center profits 25 percent. These proceeds go toward future renovations and art classes for all age groups.
