The spirit of competition has some students pepped for intramural sports this semester.
Director of Intramurals Jennifer Rigdon said indoor volleyball and flag football teams have already been formed, and the opportunity to sign up for indoor soccer ends next week.
Rigdon said 11 flag football teams and 12 indoor volleyball teams have signed up to participate in this semester’s intramurals.
Sophomore Jerrod White said he is more than ready to fight for a championship title with his flag football team.
“We’re a juggernaut,” White said. “Any time you can just come in and have a title handed to you, of course you’re going to be excited.”
White, who also plays varsity baseball, said intramurals give students a chance to reminisce over glory days they might have had in high school.
“(My team and I) were all great high school phenoms,” White said. “This is our chance to shine again.”
While other students might not mirror White’s thirst for victory in intramural sports, many are enthusiastic about the upcoming games.
Senior Brent Randle said he looks forward to the laid-back competition.
“It’s fun, and it’s something to do to kill time,” Randle said.
He said he likes the low-pressure atmosphere of intramurals, but said he was prepared for tough competition.
“I like the competition. I have fun while I’m competing,” Randle said.
Rigdon said intramurals provide both student-athletes as well as non-athletes with a chance to get active and have fun.
“It gives them a chance to be a part of a competitive atmosphere,” Rigdon said.
Rigdon said basketball, racquetball, softball and ultimate Frisbee will be offered in the spring.
