On April 9-10, members of the Baker Orange and Wildcat staffs participated in the annual Kansas Associated Collegiate Press Conference and Awards Banquet held in Wichita.
The Baker Orange received 46 awards, including the All-Kansas Award for a four-year private university. The Wildcat received 10 awards. Also, seniors Tara White and Taylor Atkins, were awarded with Journalist of the Year for newspaper and yearbook.
“It’s a huge honor to receive the All-Kansas because basically it means that in our class we are the best, which is a huge honor,” editor Jen Thierer said.
White, convergence editor, said the Journalist of the Year award had profound meaning for her.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for all the work I’ve done in journalism.”
Senior Allison Scahill said Professor Gywn Mellinger’s teaching is a big part of Baker’s success.
“Gwyn puts a lot of emphasis on AP style and spot news reporting,” Scahill said. “She also puts a lot of emphasis on accuracy.”
The staff has been to KACP nine times and has been awarded All-Kansas for a four-year private university seven times, Mellinger said.
