The game of ultimate Frisbee has become an everyday activity for a few Baker University students who are hoping to boost the competition to the next level.
Senior Mark Chubb said some students at Baker want to get ultimate Frisbee as an official club so the university would support it. Chubb explained the club would operate like a school team and faculty would be involved.
“It would kind of be like a club ultimate,” Chubb said. “It’s something we are working on.”
Senior Evan Wright said ultimate is a fun game that combines football and soccer.
“It’s good athletic competition,” he said. “But at the same time you don’t necessarily have to be athletic to be good.”
Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact disc sport played by two teams of seven players, according to the Web site www.UPA.org. Players aren’t allowed to run when holding the disc, and points are scored when players catch the disc in their end zones without breaking any rules. The disc may be thrown or passed in any direction.
Chubb said the game is not physical at all, and everyone is invited.
“There’s no sort of arguments. People call their own fouls. It’s just a big friendly game. It’s like a get together,” Chubb said. Sophomore Sarah Jones said she started playing ultimate Frisbee frequently last spring.
“It’s a really good workout, and it’s a lot of fun at the same time,” Jones said.
Wright said many people are in support of organizing a traveling team that would play against other schools.
“We can play teams from local colleges like MidAmerica or Ottawa or Avila,” he said.
