Mungano members kicked off their events this year with food, fun and Frisbee at the Welcome Back Bash held Friday.
Mungano President Kelly Vaughan said she was pleased with the turnout.
“It was one of the best turnouts I’ve seen in a long time,” she said. “A lot of people came out that I never thought would come, so that was pretty cool. It was a really good mixture of people.”
Multicultural Affairs Coordinator Ron Holden said he was unable to attend the event, but heard about its success.
“I know it went pretty well,” he said. “There were about 20 people there at any given time, with more people filtering in and out.”
Vaughan said Mungano is working on sponsoring more events, including activities scheduled next week to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Senior Alex Villalobos said she and junior Michael Angarita will be teaching salsa lessons at 8 p.m. on Monday in Harter Union.
“We’re going to be teaching very basic salsa moves,” she said. “Anyone is more than welcome to come. Girls just need to bring their heels, and don’t worry about finding a partner because we’ll be matching you up with someone.”
Villalobos, who taught salsa lessons last year as well, said she hopes more people can attend this year.
“I think last year we had around 12-15 people,” she said. “Hopefully this year we can get more people to come out, especially since we have more Latin American students.”
Vaughan said other events for Hispanic Heritage Month include the decorating of the cafeteria, a chapel service with Hispanic speakers and the showing of “La Familia.”
Mungano Secretary Kendra Scarbrough said Mungano changed its mission statement and set different goals this year.
“We confined our mission statement to make it more word-friendly,” she said. “Our main goal is for Mungano members to have fun and unify brother and sisterhood. We want to become more aware of everyone’s diversity, background and culture.”
