The Wildcats buried themselves under a mound of poor shooting and lack of execution as the Lady Moundbuilders of Southwestern College beat the Baker University women’s basketball team 58-49 Monday in Winfield.

“We just really struggled shooting from the floor,” junior post Erin Oliver said. “If we are going to be successful, we have to become more of an offensive threat.”

The Lady Builders shot just 36.8 percent from the field but limited Baker to 34.8 percent shooting from the field.

Junior Allie Heinen said shooting was definitely Baker’s Achilles’ heel against the Lady Builders.

“We couldn’t make a shot,” Heinen said. “We weren’t hitting anything.”

Turnovers also plagued the ‘Cats as Baker committed 24 against Southwestern.

Oliver said Southwestern gave the ‘Cats chances to get back in the game.

“We had a bunch of opportunities to come out on top in this game, and we just didn’t capitalize on our chances,” Oliver said. “It was just a tough game for us.”

Freshman guard Tayler Stacks said this one slipped away from them.

“It was a game we should have won,” Stacks said. “We let it get away from us.”

Heinen agreed with her young teammate.

“We definitely should have won this game,” Heinen said. “We were ahead toward the end of the game, and they made a couple key plays down the stretch. Then they made their free throws to put the game out of reach. We had every opportunity to win the game, but we didn’t take advantage of them.”

In action Nov. 21, the Wildcats took the floor against the University of St. Mary Spires. Facing a former teammate, Baker had added motivation winning 75-59.

Heinen and others played solid defense shutting down former Wildcat Addie Heim and the Spires.

MidAmerica Nazarene University traveled to Baldwin City Thursday to face the Wildcats in Collins Center. Results of this contest were unavailable at press time.
