The Baker University orchestra was scheduled to perform its last concert of the year Thursday.
Adjunct Instructor of Music and Orchestra Lori McKinney said the orchestra will be playing “Symphony No. 8 (First Movement)” by Franz Schubert, “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saens and selections from “Phantom of the Opera” by Webber/Custer.
Cellist Tammy Takaishi said being under the direction of McKinney has been beneficial.
“I think (the year) is going great,” Takaishi said. “The music is much more difficult. We’re finally having to play music that is much more collegiate and professional music.”
Sophomore Martin Feree, who plays the viola, said he really likes the music selection for this concert.
“I like it a lot,” he said. “It’s a big change (from the last concert).”
Feree said McKinney has brought a different spin to orchestra than he experienced last year.
“We’re playing different music, but I think it’s better than before,” he said. “Last year, we played more contemporary music, and this year, we’re playing more classical music, which I like so much better.”
McKinney said her time at Baker has been beneficial for her, as well.
“It was a difficult decision to leave my comfort zone after teaching in the same school system for so many years,” she said. “The change has been both good and healthy for us. The Baker family has been welcoming and very kind.”
