For Baker students looking for a homestyle meal without spending too much money, the Wooden Spoke, 203 First St., may be a restaurant worth trying.
The Wooden Spoke opened in Baldwin City about eight years ago, but JoAnne Arnold purchased the store July 1.
“She is really working to make some positive changes,” Tina Johnson, an employee at the Wooden Spoke, said. “She is willing to try new things and is open for any new ideas that people have.”
Johnson said the restaurant offers appetizers, three TVs and the band Blind Date from the Kansas City area will be playing at 9 p.m. Saturday. They hope to be able to offer more band performances in the future. The restaurant also has two pool tables.
For students, the Wooden Spoke offers dollar draws on Tuesdays and coupons during some of the events on campus.
“We have a good variety of food and fair prices,” Johnson said. “We try to have specials every day to offer items that are not on the menu.”
Johnson said the restaurant is eager to add to the menu.
“In Baldwin there aren’t many places that have the family food type restaurant atmosphere,” junior Adam Tebben said. “It is good to be able and get some home cooked food, and it was just what I was looking for.”
The restaurant hopes to provide a comfortable setting for people to be able to eat without being rushed.
“It is a nice place to sit and talk that isn’t too expensive,” senior Kyle Jones said. “The atmosphere is relaxing. It is a nice place to go for a date without going to Lawrence, and it is not expensive at all.”
The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday for lunch and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dinner.
