Wildcats to head south for holiday

While most Baker University students will experience a chilly winter wonderland during winter break, the women's basketball team will be enjoying a warmer holiday as it travels to Florida for games and sets off afterward for a four-day cruise. Women's basketball coach Susan Decker said the team tries to do something out of the ordinary and go someplace warm during winter break every few years.

The opening of a Subway restaurant brought another choice to the Baker University community and Baldwin City residents, and another option may soon be on its way. Sophomore Mattie Deel, an employee of Subway, said the restaurant is good for Baldwin City because it provides much-needed variety to the eating establishments in town.

Christmas complaints abound

Christmas is coming up. People complain about how fake it has become - how it drips with consumerism, and yes, Christmas did lose some of its meaning over the years. Kids just know they get presents and don't know why, but one aspect of Christmas has stood the test of time - family togetherness.

Even with their quick guards, the Graceland University Yellow Jackets proved no contest for the Baker University men's basketball team as it picked up its second conference win of the season. After a slow start from the tip-off, the 'Cats beat the Yellow Jackets 81-66 while shooting 47 percent from the field.

Report could push U.S. toward success

After more than five long, bloody years in Iraq, the United States now might have an actual strategy for success within the war-torn nation. Finally, this week's report to President Bush and Congress from the bipartisan Iraq Study Group has provided the administration and the nation with a vital assessment of the reality of the situation in Iraq, as well as attainable recommendations for cleaning up the mess and getting out.

Dear editorial staff, I was quite surprised to see that the Dec.1 edition of the Baker Orange had no coverage of W.I.R.E.'s landmine victims awareness campaign the week of Nov. 27. While the weather in the latter half of the week did affect some activities associated with the campaign, the snow also seems to have blinded the student newspaper to the innovation this student group brought to raising their peers' awareness of this serious international problem.

Thanksgiving, a day dedicated to gratefulness, is a distant memory now with Christmas sneaking up more quickly than seems possible. As I've mentioned before, Christmas often gets tangled up in commercialism. Many people cannot see past a list of wants that results in shiny boxes wrapped and piled underneath a tree.

From graduate school to percussion construction to teaching and gigging, Baker University's graduating music majors have a wide range of plans and options open to them. Senior Daniel Colwell, whose focus is strings education, has essentially completed his music major but will student teach next semester before applying to graduate school, he said.
