Opening day pushed back for barbecue

Residents of Baldwin City may have to wait a little longer than planned to get the barbecue they have been anticipating. Hickory Creek BBQ owner Ric Gere said he was not sure his business would be opening on Sept. 15 as he had planned. "I'll be there on the fifteenth," he said.

Cordoba's Family Restaurant, 516 Ames St., is now open to spice up the variety of dining in Baldwin City. The restaurant will soon be offering a full Mexican menu, as well as a full American menu. Co-owner Jessica Cordoba said she and husband Cesar moved back to Baldwin City from Colorado three years ago with hopes of opening a family Mexican restaurant.

Instead, I created this cartoon. Monday, on the five-year anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks, United States citizens had little to celebrate.

Mungano members kicked off their events this year with food, fun and Frisbee at the Welcome Back Bash held Friday. Mungano President Kelly Vaughan said she was pleased with the turnout. "It was one of the best turnouts I've seen in a long time," she said.

Tennis teams grow through play with NCAA competition

Injuries and tough competition have led the Baker University men's and women's tennis teams to mixed results in the last week, but the teams are optimistic about the final tournaments of the fall season, coach Regan Dodd said. The team competed in the Wichita Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament Saturday and Sunday, which included Division I, Division II and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics schools.

Audiences looking for a mixture of William Shakespeare and the Wild West will soon have a medium as the Baker University theater department has announced the cast list for "A Comedy of Errors." Guest director Beate Pettigrew, who teaches theater at Johnson County Community College, said she chose to change the time period to the Wild West in order to relate more with the audience.

Baker University Student Senate plans on working to unify the Baker and Baldwin City communities this year, Treasurer Michelle Burton said. "This year we really want to kind of step it up, and we really want to get (University President) Pat Long involved in a lot of stuff because we basically want student senate to be connected with the faculty, connected with administrators, connected with students, connected with the community and connected with Baldwin City as a whole," she said.
