New fraternity needs support

ÂPlain and simple, diversity is an integral aspect of progressivism and the need to grow and expand. Currently, Baker University is making great strides at further integrating this campus. For the past several years, historically black fraternities and sororities have been trying to create a niche in Baker's greek system.

Darfur crisis needs focus

The world has "no higher priority, no greater imperative" than to end the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Not since the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of slaughter, rape, starvation and displacement. Government supported troops in the Sudan have displaced over 2.

Smrha moves to new post

Baker University's Judy Smrha, associate professor of business and economics, will use her business skills in a new way next year as she switches from teaching to administration work. Her main task will be increasing integration of the institution research and assessment.

Students visit BU Saturday for tours

Forty-six prospective students visited the Baker University campus Saturday as part of a junior visit day put on by the admission department. The high school juniors, along with their parents, attended the day in hopes of experiencing Baker at an early stage of deciding on a college, said Louise Cummings-Simmons, vice president of admissions.

Murals explained by speaker

On Tuesday, students and faculty found solace from the cold rain at a presentation detailing Irish murals that took place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Mabee 100.? The presentation, titled "Widening the Frame: The Politics of Representing Northern Irish Murals," was delivered by Kathryn Conrad, an associate professor at the University of Kansas.

Summer housing hunt

Baker University students staying in Baldwin City for the summer will need a place to live, and students are looking on campus and off. One option is to make arrangements to stay on campus. The number of students interested in living in the apartments for the summer has grown from 12 students last year to 30 students this year.

A tornado tore through Lawrence March 12, ruining numerous buildings. 60 percent of the University of Kansas' buildings were damaged, which devastated many wedding couples plans of marriage on KU's campus.

Activism encouraged at BU

On Monday, thousands of people joined in a mass protest against potential tightened immigration laws. The participants stayed home from school and work, and many took to the streets to make their opinion known. According to the New York Times, one Chicago high school had only 17 percent attendance.
