Teams fall short of nationals

The Baker University women's tennis team ended its season Saturday after losing 5-3 to McKendree College in the Region V semifinals.?? "The rain kind of put a damper on things," junior Kelsey Stephens said. "We had to wait around all day for the rain, so it was hard to get motivated.

Students to vote on speech

After weeks of discussion about censorship and free speech, the Baker University student body will have the final say concerning whether student senate will pass a resolution addressing censorship on campus. At Tuesday's student senate meeting, senators voted to allow students the opportunity to express their opinion on censorship in the form of an online survey.

Proposal to provide institution

Associate Professor of Philosophy Tom Peard said he is in the process of developing a proposal that would make the study of ethics a much larger part of the Baker University experience. The proposal is for an ethics institute to be established at Baker which would provide a center for group discussions and seminars that relate to ethical issues, Peard said.

Weather, competition combine for poor finish for track teams

This weekend, the Baker University men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Heart of America Athletic Conference outdoor championships in Liberty, Mo., and came home with less than desirable finishes. Horrendous weather conditions and possible late season fatigue affected the Wildcats' chances, freshman Ari Penner said.

Baker University will soon be more visible and organized with signs being placed on campus and around Baldwin City. The signs being placed on and around campus will be used to direct students around campus, identify the buildings and direct visitors to the Baker campus and parking lots.

Along with many other required general education courses, students must take two hours of fitness and well being courses. Students can choose between various classes including tennis, weight lifting, racquetball and badminton or can take a less-active class, such as lifetime fitness.

Court date set for student

A court date has been scheduled for Baker University junior Jon Roper, Riley County District Attorney Barry Wilkerson said. Roper will have a preliminary hearing on June 6, Wilkerson said, with a potential trial date to be set later. Roper will face charges on two Level 3 felonies, conspiracy to sell or distribute marijuana and conspiracy to sell or distribute cocaine, Wilkerson said.

Lambert to meet with BOT

Today's Baker University Board of Trustees meeting will be University President Dan Lambert's last, as he is scheduled to retire this month. "I'm going to do my report and do what's expected of me in my current job," Lambert said. "In my 19 years, I've done 60-some of these, and I will miss them a lot.

One hour was definitely not put to waste at the last faculty senate meeting of the year, which was on Tuesday morning. Several issues were voted on, including changes to course and major degree requirements, approval of next year's travel interterm courses and an agreement on the May graduates.
