Long brings life to Baker campus

As Baker University quickly approaches its sesquicentennial, it seems the institution has plenty of room for redefinition, and indications would say that change will be positive. With a new president accompanying numerous new faces on campus, it seems inevitable that Baker will experience changes in the coming years.

New ID cards distributed

Students returning to campus this fall will find their ID cards have gotten a new look and number. Director of Computer Services Perry Chapman said social security numbers had to be removed from the cards because of a law passed by the state of Kansas barring social security numbers from being used as student ID numbers.

Frustrating rhetoric shows reluctance to solve problems at home, around globe

Anti-Israel and anti-Semitic, is there a difference? Can a person's opposition to a nation's foreign policy be construed as racism? Do such attempts to simplify a complicated issue and to demonize political opponents have a legitimate place in our nation's political debate? This subject comes to mind for obvious reasons.

Long looks for vision as new president

In certain respects, it seems obvious Baker University President Pat Long is new on campus. With less than two months since her official installment as the 28th president of Baker University July 1, Long is still in the process of meeting community members and getting accustomed to her new life.

VanOsdale fills new greek coordinator position

Bryan VanOsdale has taken on a brand new position created at Baker University as the full-time director of greek life. "We hired Bryan to take over the whole realm of greek life on campus," Associate Dean of Students Mark Zeno said. Zeno and Director of Student Activities Shelby Coxon were jointly in charge of greek life prior to the creation fo the position.

Early enrollment numbers see slight increase

As rumors spiral about the anticipated number of new students, all eyes are on Baker University's records and registration office. Although official numbers aren't available until Sept. 20, Director of Records and Registration Ruth Miller said as of Tuesday, 925 students were enrolled.

Soon-to-be employee dies suddenly

Shana Schroeder-Ebel, 34, died July 22 from an acute asthma attack in her parent's bathroom in Inman, Kan. In July, Toby Ebel, Web services administrator at Baker University, his wife Shana and their daughter Grace, picked up their son, Britton, in Selena from basketball camp and headed for her parents' house.

Mungano hosts days for female students

Baker University's multicultural organization, Mungano, held a women's workshop about the body, mind and soul on Monday and Tuesday. The workshop was open up to all Baker female students. Senior Ashley Hawkins said she was at the workshop Monday night and gave a presentation about how women need to respect themselves.

Golf team takes first in tourney

The Baker University golf teams competed in the Graceland Invitational on Saturday and Sunday and at the William Woods Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. The Wildcats had strong finishes from both the men's and the women's teams during the two tournaments.

Morgan memorialized

Many people knew Jeff Morgan as J MO, and remember his love for singing. Others recall how he survived Hodgkin's disease and later in life helped children with their own battle of cancer. However he was known, he will always be remembered for his love of God and his friends.

Hastings to leave BU

Director of the Counseling Center Sarah Hastings will be leaving Baker University at the end of the academic year to take a position at Radford University in Radford, Va. "When I saw the posting, I wasn't planning to leave. I had no intentions of moving on for at least a couple of years," she said.

Relay for Life moved to summer

Relay for Life committee members hope to reach their goal without the entirety of Baker University participating this year. With the conflict of graduation and the renovation of Baker's football stadium, Relay for Life will move to the summer, limiting student participation.
