Academic, charitable awards go to greeks

The Greek Man and Woman of the year were named during the greek awards April 27 at the end of Greek Week . Senior Ashley Jones, of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, was named greek woman of the year, and senior Ryan Kuhn, of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, was named greek man of the year.

In the near future, Baker University professors may be required to submit midterm grades to not only freshmen, but to all students. Junior Ryan Boyer, the only student representative on the Academic Standards and Enrollment Committee, said the committee discussed the topic of this new requirement and compiled a survey that was distributed to every professor on campus.

Students enrolling in Baker University's foreign language programs during the next school year will be specifically placed in certain classes thanks to placement exams for the foreign language classes. Students in foreign language classes took the placement exams, called WebCAPE.

Golf play ends for ‘Cats, community

The Baker University men's golf team finished out the season last weekend with a fourth-place finish in the conference and Region V tournaments. The men competed in the conference tournament on April 27 and 28 in St. Peter's, Mo. Coach Karen Exon said they didn't do as well as she thought they could have.

Students to vote on speech

After weeks of discussion about censorship and free speech, the Baker University student body will have the final say concerning whether student senate will pass a resolution addressing censorship on campus. At Tuesday's student senate meeting, senators voted to allow students the opportunity to express their opinion on censorship in the form of an online survey.

Proposal to provide institution

Associate Professor of Philosophy Tom Peard said he is in the process of developing a proposal that would make the study of ethics a much larger part of the Baker University experience. The proposal is for an ethics institute to be established at Baker which would provide a center for group discussions and seminars that relate to ethical issues, Peard said.

The Baker University women's tennis team ended its season Saturday after losing 5-3 to McKendree College in the Region V semifinals.?? "The rain kind of put a damper on things," junior Kelsey Stephens said. "We had to wait around all day for the rain, so it was hard to get motivated.

Weather rains on women’s season

The Baker University softball team's season ended abruptly as its conference tournament was canceled due to inclement weather. Baker was scheduled to play against Culver-Stockton College Friday, but the rainy weather prevented that from happening. Head coach Jennifer Rigdon said the team was disappointed by the decision not to play the tournament.

On Monday, thousands of people joined in a mass protest against potential tightened immigration laws. The participants stayed home from school and work, and many took to the streets to make their opinion known. According to the New York Times, one Chicago high school had only 17 percent attendance.

Baker University will soon be more visible and organized with signs being placed on campus and around Baldwin City. The signs being placed on and around campus will be used to direct students around campus, identify the buildings and direct visitors to the Baker campus and parking lots.
