Spring break can be and is the pivotal moment for most students to escape from their real lives and to take a step into a scenery of relaxation.
For some students, they will spend their spring break traveling to different tropical places for fun in the sun, and for others, nothing beats hanging around home and sleeping their days away.
A group of Delta Delta Delta sorority members made some last-minute plans to take a trip to South Padre Island, Texas. Eight women are going on a seven-night stay on the island. They don’t have anything specific planned, but hope to go parasailing or maybe even catch some artists who might be performing there.
“What I am looking forward to most about this trip is spending time with my friends, having some time away from school and just having fun away from Baldwin City,” sophomore Paige Queen said.
As for some men of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, their hearts are set on Panama City, Fla. There are around 16 men making the trip. Junior Mason Dick was in charge of coordinating the vacation and hopes to make spring break trips a tradition from now on.
“Usually it is my job to coordinate where we are going to go for spring break,” Dick said. “Last year, we went to South Padre and had the time of our lives, so we wanted to do it again but make it a little different.”
Dick made all the arrangements for the trip, where the men will have two conjoining condos and will make the trip a road trip by driving down to Florida. They will stay the whole week, Friday through the following Saturday, and will try to find different activities to get involved in. They want to go to a techno concert called Day Glow, where neon paint will be shot onto the audience, but other than that, Dick says it is all about relaxation and exploring the city to see what it has to offer them.
“I think because of the success of last year’s trip, we are going to try to continue to do these sorts of trips for as long as we can because the fun we have is unreal,” Dick said.
For some spring sport participants, athletics will limit their options to travel.
Sophomore Tara Chumley, a Baker University softball player, will be staying in Baldwin City over the break. The team will have practice every day with a tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday to break up the week. Chumley is thankful she will have her teammates around to keep her company and give her people to hang out with, but will miss having that extra time for much-needed rest.
“It’s kind of frustrating not having a break because we don’t really have anything to look forward to, but this is one of the sacrifices you make as an athlete in the spring season. It will be worth it in the long run,” Chumley said.
