The National Collegiate Clothing Campaign is a nationwide cause to get students to clean out their closets to donate clothes “in good condition” to local agencies that give back to the less fortunate.
The campaign is in its second year and its main goal is to reach as many college campuses as possible. For Baker, this is its first year participating in the event and Director of Student Life Brett Bruner hopes it has a positive spin on campus.
“I found this on a random lister that I am on and thought it would be a cool way to get students to easily go through their closets to give back some shirts, clothes, pants or whatever it might be,” Bruner said.
The event will take place April 16 – 20. Each day there will be a group of volunteer students along with Bruner in the Union Lobby between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to collect clothing.
Students have heard about this through printed formats, student-wide emails and social media sites.
“Anything that is still in good wearable condition can be donated,” Bruner said. “The local agencies will take anything we are willing to give them.”
The donations collected by Baker students will go to two local agencies: the PentHouse and Social Services, both in Douglas County. Overall, the campaign is trying to get as many students to give back to a cause by giving them something easy, like a spring cleaning, to do during their spring semester.
“I think it will hopefully be another great way for students to get engaged and contributing to society as part of our university’s mission statement,” Bruner said. “It is something easily they can do. If every student donates one article of clothing from their closet that they aren’t using anymore, that is a pretty big donation that can go back to a local agency.”
