Baker University students gathered Monday in the Harter Union Plaza to welcome the newest member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority.
“It’s a kind of coming out party letting the rest of campus know who our new members are,” Stephanie Nelson, treasurer of Zeta Phi Beta, said.
Freshman Tyler Sloan was the only member inducted into Zeta Phi Beta at this year’s probate.
“Being a solo is pretty special because it’s just you,” Sloan said. “Solos aren’t that common and it was cool to see that everyone who attended was there for me.”
In addition to the supporters from Baker, members of the University of Kansas and Kansas State University chapters of Zeta Phi Beta, and the corresponding male chapter Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, traveled to attend the probate.
During the majority of the probate, Sloan wore a mask as she recited information about Zeta Phi Beta. She also chanted greetings to the members of her own chapter and the members of the visiting greek chapters.
Sloan’s mask was removed at the end of the ceremony to unveil her to campus.
“I’m just ready to start the service,” Sloan said. “Now that I’m in it, it’s time to do the work.”
