It is not often that Major League Baseball players lend a helping hand in Baldwin City, but on Sunday, the Baker University baseball team welcomed four former players.

The ’Cats collaborated with Keepers of the Legends to bring four former players to give a deeper look into the world of baseball.

The group included Brian Holman, a former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners and Montreal Expos, and Bill Severns, who moved around in the Milwaukee Brewers organization for six years.

Two former Kansas City Royals players were involved as well. Ed Hearn was traded to the Royals for the 1986-1987 season, but quickly moved on from baseball due to health issues. Hearn, Holman and Severns were joined by Royals Hall of Famer Frank White, who has his No. 20 retired by the organization.

The players did not spend time talking about winning, batting averages or tips to throw a perfect curve ball. Instead, the players discussed topics like family, faith, never giving up and playing with a passion for the game. The Baker baseball team was joined with the Baldwin High baseball team, along with other community members.

“Those guys really taught that perseverance was one of the most important things,” head coach Phil Hannon said.
