Baker University students have been notified by email that the Baldwin City Police Department will be ticketing any vehicles parked in front of the New Living Center where there is a yellow curb on both the north and south sides of the 600 block of Dearborn Street.
According to the email, this is in “pursuant to Section 85 of the Standard Traffic Ordinances and Uniform Public Offense Codes that Kansas issues every year and is adopted by the City of Baldwin City and Resolution No. 08-09-08.”
Although this ordinance has always been in place, there was a problem with student parking in the area in front of the NLC at the beginning of the school year.
“My understanding was I think somebody called and asked if they can park and load and unload and they were told ‘yes,'” Greg Nies, Baldwin City Police Chief, said. “And then it turned into long-term parking.”
Vehicles are allowed to pull up to the yellow curb for loading or unloading purposes or to wait for a short amount of time, as long as the vehicle is not left unattended.
“You can pull up there and wait as long as you’re behind the wheel,” Nies said. “You can wait for somebody to come out, or drop somebody off, like a pick up or loading type thing, but you cannot park. Waiting and parking are two different things.”
