Family weekend marks special time for students
“This is just a great opportunity for students to have the opportunity to just showcase talents that they might not normally get a chance to,” Burns said.
This year, seniors Will Schowalter and Kyrie Bair will serve as hosts to the event.
“They are just two people who are fun, have lots of energy, are good performers and will get the crowd going,” Burns said.
Schowalter also served as a host for last year’s talent show.
“Basically the role of the host is to entertain and to introduce the upcoming acts,” Schowalter said. “Last year, I told some pretty lame jokes in between the acts.”
Schowalter said he plans some of the things he’ll say, but a lot of it is just “winging it.”
Burns said all students are encouraged to participate in the talent show, and even family members of students and faculty and staff participate as well.
“We’ve had siblings join in and a lot of the music faculty will share their talents as well,” Burns said. “Really this is just an opportunity to showcase the talent in the Baker family at large.”
The Baker Speech Choir will perform at the talent show as well as the improvisation group, Loud Noises.
In addition to the acts up on stage, the lobby of Rice Auditorium will also be the site of an art show.
“Last year, we expanded and had an art show out in the lobby because again it might not be that your talent is athletics or music or something you can get up on stage and perform, but art is still a talent so we have some students who are going to share their work that way as well,” Burns said.
The talent show takes place during Baker’s annual Family Weekend and Burns said it’s meant to be a fun, relaxed event for families to attend.
“I think some people worry that it’s a talent contest, but it’s not a contest, it’s just a show,” Burns said. “It’s laid back and just a super supportive environment and audience and it’s just a good evening.”
