In another challenging match taken to double overtime, the Baker University men’s soccer team picked up their second tie of the season against No. 19 Ashford University Saturday, pushing its record to 1-3-2.
Senior Odaine Sinclair scored in the eighth minute to give Baker the first lead of the game at 1-0. Just 20 minutes after his goal, Sinclair was given a red card forcing the Wildcats to play a man down for the duration of the match. Baker goalkeeper Matt Bickley feels the team handled the situation well.
“(Ashford) was pressing forward with numbers and we were able to stay strong defensively and stay organized,” Bickley said.
Baker’s defense was unable to stop Ashford forward Tim Krautheim though, as he shot and made a goal just before the half was over.
The Wildcats gained the lead again quick into the second half as senior Donny George’s shot deflected off the goalpost allowing senior Richard Klein to send the ball right back in past Ashford keeper Patrick Kinsella.
Baker held on to their 2-1 lead until the 83rd minute of the game when Krautheim’s shot beat Bickley for the second time to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
Despite the two goals given up during regulation, Bickley believed in the Wildcats going into extra time.
“I feel very confident anytime we go into overtime because as a goalie I can’t have a better team of guys in front of me,” Bickley said. “They do a really good job of sorting problems out and solving them within the game.”
Bickley had a total of seven saves on the night and his teammates took a total of 13 shots, six of which were on goal.
