Recently, sorority life here at Baker has been under a microscope due to formal recruitment and the addition of the 24-hour bid day rule. There have been many rumors and speculation around campus about sororities and recruitment, mainly focusing on the 24-hour bid day rule. I would like to shed some light on the issue and clarify why certain changes took place this year.
The 24-hour bid day rule is put into place to allow members of each sorority to welcome the newest members without the influence of men or alcohol. This is a time for the new members to get to know their new sisters and learn more about their chapter.
The issue of bid day has been a topic on the mind of Panhellenic for years. Discussions have been taking place long before the current Panhellenic Council was appointed. This year, the Panhellenic Council, alongside the individual chapters, has been strategizing a gradual change to the 24-hour rule in order for all students involved to fully support the policy. However, during recruitment the Panhellenic Council was notified that this rule was required and a change had to be made immediately.
It is unfortunate that we found out so late about this change and were not able to change the recruitment schedule or explain the change to those outside of Greek life. However, the sorority women accepted this rule quickly and were able to focus on the women participating in recruitment, which is what this is all truly about.
There are many rules regarding recruitment, and this was just another addition to those rules. These rules are in place so that the sorority women can concentrate on recruitment and gaining new members for their chapter. This is a sacrifice all of the women are willing to make so that we can continue sorority life here at Baker.
I know these rules and why we follow them might not make sense to those outside of Greek life, but they are extremely important to the sororities. Not following these rules can result in serious consequences for Greek life as a whole. We ask that the Baker community supports those involved in Greek life with any rule that our governing bodies set for us.
