The Baker University men’s soccer team picked up its third tie of the season in its third double-overtime game Sunday against No. 15 Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.
The 2-2 ballgame adjusted Baker’s overall record to 2-3-3 on the season, and Kansas Wesleyan now stands at 4-2-2.
With just 1:02 on the clock at the beginning of the first half, Kansas Wesleyan left midfielder Jose Velasco crossed the ball to the far post allowing teammate Ricardo Raygoza to shoot the ball past Baker’s goalkeeper senior Brendan Allen.
Kansas Wesleyan came out just as early in the second half scoring their second goal with 1:13 on the clock. Senior Javier Cervantes made the goal with the help of teammate Bernard Rene to put the score at 2-0.
Six minutes later, Baker defender Ben Coyle played the ball past a Coyote defender beating him and goalkeeper Francisco Marmalejo to put Baker on the board for the first time of the night.
Junior Cameron Zimmerman tied up the ballgame in the 62nd minute of the game with an assist from senior Nick Aguilar.
Although neither team was able to find the back of the net during the overtime periods, Baker took a total of three shots and the Coyotes took two. Allen recorded five saves on the night for the Wildcats and Marmalejo had four.
The Wildcats will be playing two matches at home this weekend. The first will be against Mid-America Christian on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and they will turn around Sunday to play in their first conference match against Central Methodist at 5 p.m.
“I think we are prepared,” Aguilar said. “We have experienced a lot as a team so far as far as adversity and dealing with problems goes. We are going to improve by becoming organized and applying pressure as a team, not just individually, to our upcoming opponents.”
