Members of the Baker University choirs will showcase their individual talents from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Moni’s Seafood and Barbecue for a fundraiser for the music program.
The fundraiser will benefit the choirs by raising money to help them with various expenses, such as recruiting trips and retreats.
“Dr. (Matthew) Potterton has done this sort of fundraiser before with high schools in Colorado and California and was very successful with them,” senior Paul Eltschinger said. “We are hoping to try this out and it will become somewhat of a tradition.”
The night won’t feature the choir as a whole, but will showcase the individuals who make up the multiple musical groups. The show will be made up of solos and duets, where the students will perform songs of their own material or take a well-known song to recreate it.
“A lot of my students have talents that I don’t necessarily get to see expressed in my choir,” Potterton said. “A lot of them are incredible soloists and they have other passions. I love being able to showcase that and allow the students to do that also.”
Twenty-five percent of all proceeds will go to the choir to help them offset any expenses they take in.
The basis for this fundraiser is to hopefully start up an annual “Choir Night Out” where people can come sit down, have dinner and help donate back to the choirs. Potterton said he would like to see something like this happen and to make it a tradition, such as the first Tuesday of every month that people would come out and help support the choirs.
“We just hope to have a lot of people come out. The more that come, the more that comes back to us,” Potterton said. “This is a great opportunity for not only me, but for my students. Our groups this year are making great music, the bar continues to rise and this is only helping us grow more.”
