After jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes against No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene University, the No.13 Baker football team appeared to have a positive start against the Pioneers, but it was all MNU for the remainder of Saturday’s matchup.
The Pioneers scored 42 unanswered points behind senior quarterback Sean Ransburg and junior running back Greg Gates on the way to defeating Baker 49-20.
“When I envisioned this football game, I envisioned a battle and I felt when we got up 7-0, here we go, but we didn’t” head coach Mike Grossner said. “I don’t get it. I felt like Friday night emotionally we were there. I felt like before the game emotionally we were there and then you look out there and we seem flat.”
The Wildcats got on the scoreboard first after a 48-yard touchdown pass from senior Jake Morse to senior Jake Green, but the Pioneers scored touchdowns on six straight possessions to put the game out of reach.
Ransburg had five touchdown passes in the first half and racked up 258 yards of total offense before exiting the game after two drives in the second half. Gates was also taken out of the game early in the second half after rushing for 170 yards and one touchdown.
After trailing 42-7, Morse threw his second touchdown pass to junior Andrew Augsburger to cut the deficit to 42-13, but the 2-point conversion attempt was no good.
The score remained 42-13 going into the fourth quarter, but MNU backup running back Jeremiah Clemon pushed the Pioneers’ advantage to 49-13 with 12:50 left after a 2-yard touchdown run.
Green rounded out the scoring for the night by hauling in his second touchdown catch from senior Sam Vossen to cut MNU’s lead to 49-20.
The loss dropped the Wildcats’ record to 4-2 on the season. BU will be back in action for its homecoming game against Avila University at 2 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium.
“We’ve always made a late season run,” Grossner said. “I expect our guys to regroup and make our run to see where we end up.
