The Baker University women’s soccer team defeated Avila University in a 3-0 shutout Saturday in Kansas City. Mo. to pick up its second win in the Heart of America Conference.
With the victory, the Wildcats improved to 8-2-1 on the season while Avila fell to 7-5-1 and 0-2 in the HAAC.
Freshman midfielder Shalynn Eldredge-McMillan felt the team as a whole contributed to the its third shutout of the season.
“We did a really good job of playing as a unit and defending as a group,” she said.
Rachel Theobald earned the shutout for Baker in between the pipes and racked up three saves during the match.
In the 22nd minute of the game, sophomore midfielder Alexa Fryer faced Avila goalkeeper Stephanie Gartner one-on-one, and beat her with a shot that found the back of the net to put Baker on the scoreboard for the first time.
The shutout was put in jeopardy 10 minutes later when an Avila forward took a rip at Baker’s goal, but Theobald was able to get a hand on the ball as she made a diving save to maintain the 1-0 lead for the Wildcats going into the second half.
With 16 minutes left in the game, Baker was awarded a free kick on its half of the field. Sophomore Shelby Schiraldi launched the ball and as Avila defender Amanda Schwartz was trying to clear it out, the ball bounced off her head and kept traveling toward the Eagle’s goal and past Gartner for an own-goal.
Baker’s final goal came from senior forward Finola Corley as senior Jordan Dolbin crossed the ball in from the right side and allowed her to take a shot right in front of the goal.
