Rumors of trash talk coming from MidAmerica Nazarene University players led the No. 14 Baker University women’s soccer team to a convincing defeat against the Pioneers Tuesday.
“When I heard they said this was the game they were preparing for all season, I just wanted to embarrass them,” sophomore Alexa Fryer said.
The ‘Cats had the opportunity to do just that in front of their own home crowd at Liston Stadium. The 5-0 shutout victory improved the team’s record to 9-2-1 on the season and 3-0 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. MNU fell to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the HAAC.
Fryer, the team’s leading scorer, picked up her ninth and 10th goals of the season quickly. A mere six minutes had passed by in the first half when sophomore Taylor Hensel crossed the ball into Fryer from the right side to put Baker on the board 1-0.
Six minutes after the first goal, junior Amber Pickering delivered a similar pass to Fryer, giving Baker the 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Senior Finola Corley didn’t waste any time in the second half to increase the Wildcats’ lead over the Pioneers. Her goal in the 47th minute put Baker’s lead at 3-0, but not for long.
Eleven minutes later, Corley found the back of the net again, as her next shot went flying past MNU goalkeeper Breanna Oddo. Senior Jordan Dolbin picked up the assist on the goal.
Dolbin would net a goal of her own in the 63rd minute. She took the free kick awarded to Baker from 30 yards out and although Oddo got her hands on it, she was unable to maintain it and Baker went up 5-0 for the final score of the game.
Sophomore Rachel Theobald recorded the shutout and made three saves out of the six shots the Baker defense allowed the Pioneers to take.
Baker will play No. 17 Graceland University at 5 p.m. Saturday in Lamoni, Iowa.
