Baker University Student Senate, Mungano and Zeta Phi Beta are teaming up to say “Your Voice Matters.” These organizations will be hosting a series of events over the next few weeks to increase voting awareness among students.
Silas Dulan, director of multicultural affairs and Mungano adviser, said the main point of these events is to increase awareness and promote freedom of speech.
There will be a Faculty Panel Discussion from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday in Room 100 of Mabee Hall. Professors Alan Grant, Erin Joyce, Leonard Ortiz, Carrie Coward Bucher, Marc Carter and Joe Watson will make up the faculty panel. They will discuss issues such as health care and taxes and answer questions which students may have about the presidential candidates or election.
Other events include a Last Debate Watch Party Oct. 22 in the Harter Union Lobby, a Baker Candidate Poll Oct. 29 in Hartley Plaza and a Freedom of Speech Poetry Slam Nov. 1 in McKibbin Hall.
The Freedom of Speech Poetry Slam will feature special guest poet M’Vyonne Payne. The event will feature more than poetry, though. Dulan said the main purpose is to encourage freedom of speech, whether that is through poetry, interpretive dance or song.
“We’re really looking forward to this,” Dulan said. “It is going to be a great event.”
The “Your Voice Matters” events began Tuesday with a voter registration table in the Harter Union.
“A lot of students don’t vote because they’re uninformed or they think it won’t make a difference,” senior Amanda Sams said.
Elections will take place nationwide on Nov. 6.
“Everyone should vote because it makes a change,” sophomore Tyler Sloan said. “You can’t complain about things if you don’t vote.”
