After losing the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament championship game and a chance at an undefeated season to MidAmerica Nazarene University last season, there have been feelings of unfinished business among the Baker University men’s soccer team.
Those feelings diminished Tuesday night as the ‘Cats handed the No. 9 Pioneers their first loss of the season.
“It felt good to get back at them,” senior Odaine Sinclair said. “We played together as a team and I’m happy we did so well.”
The 1-0 victory improved Baker’s record to 2-1 in the HAAC and 5-4-3 overall, while MidAmerica Nazarene fell to 8-1-5 on the season and 1-1-1 in conference.
The back-and-forth battle remained scoreless throughout the first half and each team only took three shots.
After a pass from freshman Amer Didic, Sinclair launched the ball into the upper corner of the goal to break the deadlock in the 61st minute of the game.
Although Sinclair’s goal was the only one scored, the battle continued until the final seconds of the game.
With two minutes left, MidAmerica Nazarene was awarded a free kick just 10 yards out and right in front of the goal. Senior Trent Remmich took and missed the shot on the far left side.
Senior goalkeeper Brendan Allen picked up the shutout and recorded two saves out of the seven shots the Baker defense allowed MNU to take.
Baker took a total of 17 shots with nine on goal. Sinclair and junior Andy Griffin led the way with three shots apiece.
The Wildcats will hit the road this weekend as they take on Graceland University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Lamoni, Iowa.
