The Baker University men’s soccer team is on a roll as the Wildcats picked up their third straight Heart of America Athletic conference win Sunday against Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.
Senior goalkeeper Brendan Allen is pleased with the team’s performance on the field.
“Not only did we connect on passes and apply pressure like we needed to, we also did a really good job of playing together as a team,” Allen said. “We showed up with confidence and were able to roll with it.”
The ‘Cats were able to display their certainty just three minutes after stepping on to the field as senior Ethan Bauer ripped a shot from the right side of the goal. The ball deflected off a Yellowjackets’ defender into the goal to give Baker the early 1-0 lead.
Roughly 20 minutes later, senior captain Nick Aguilar took an unassisted shot which beat Graceland’s goalkeeper Christian Quintanilla and increased Baker’s lead to 2-0 going into halftime.
The deficit was cut in half for Graceland with 13:24 left on the clock as Cody Bletlinger crossed the ball to Yacine Hamchaoui, who took the shot that beat Allen.
Baker junior Ben Coyle was quick to respond, though, as he answered with an unassisted shot three minutes later which put the game away for good at 3-1.
With the loss, Graceland fell to 6-6-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the HAAC, and the Wildcats improved their record to 6-4-3 and 3-1 in conference play.
In spite of its solid performances in the last three games, Allen hopes the team will be able to maintain a focused mentality as it faces upcoming competition.
“Just because we’ve had a few good results, doesn’t mean we can lose sight of the obstacles we have coming up,” Allen said. “We need to take it one game at a time and bring everything we’ve got to the field each time we play.”
Baker will be back in action Saturday at Benedictine College at 7 p.m. in Atchison.
