This November, Native American History Month is being recognized here at Baker. In honor of this, I decided to use this blog to talk briefly about a historical event in the Native American culture specific to the Cherokee Nation.
I remember learning about the Trail of Tears in my history classes in elementary school; however, not a lot of people really understand how it impacted the native peoples. The Trail of Tears was a defining time for the Cherokee people because we were removed from our homes in Georgia and relocated to an Indian reservation in Oklahoma. The move was brutal, taking the lives of many.
It is called the Trail of TearsTrail of Tears literally because of the many tears cried — an estimated 4,000 people died during this time. literally because of the many tears cried — an estimated 4,000 people died during this time. This is a tragic event in the history of the Cherokee people; however it is the reason that Oklahoma is now the home of the Cherokee Nation.
