After two bye weeks, the No. 14 Baker University football team improved to 6-2 with a 29-9 victory over Culver-Stockton College Saturday in Canton, Mo.
Baker fell behind early as C-SC got out to a 3-0 lead on a field goal from Michael Carmargo. BU limited the damage by stopping Culver-Stockton on 3rd and Goal from the 1-yard line.
The BU offense started clicking late in the first quarter and put Baker in front 7-3 when junior quarterback Jake Morse fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior Jake Green.
Morse wasted little time adding to the lead as he threw his second touchdown pass to freshman Jermaine Broomfield on BU’s next drive. The 18-yard passing play gave Baker a 13-3 advantage, but the extra point attempt was blocked.
Senior Steven Stewart tacked on a 27-yard field goal to extend BU’s lead to 16-3 before halftime.
Culver-Stockton had its last two drives of the first half stopped by two interceptions from senior Josh Fairley.
In the second half, Baker went to the run game as Morse recorded two rushing touchdowns. Broomfield did not have a rushing touchdown, but he led BU with 150 yards on the ground to go along with his touchdown reception.
BU struggled to hold on to the football in the fourth quarter as the team lost three fumbles, but Culver-Stockton was unable to turn any of the turnovers into points.
Culver-Stockton continued to have turnover woes as well, however, as junior Adrian Pearson picked off a pass from C-SC quarterback Curtis Widener and Fairley hauled in his third interception to seal the victory for BU.
Baker will be on the road again next week with a game against No. 21 Benedictine College at 1 p.m. Saturday in Atchison.
