Heart, passion, energy, piano tuners, stone masons and waitresses are six topics that Assistant Professor of English Marti Mihalyi says will be included in her “Last Lecture”-esque speech, which will be given Tuesday.
“It’s going to be about being passionate about various elements of life and devoting yourself to learning and living a meaningful life,” Mihalyi said. “I think a lot of students are trying to do that and trying to have meaning in life.”
The Last Lecture series was started last year by junior Erin Wilson as a chance for students to hear the passions and thoughts of their professors. Wilson, the social and cultural issues coordinator of Student Activities Council, had Assistant Professor of History John Richards speak last year about his life.
Wilson had recruited Mihalyi to speak to the students previously, but Mihalyi turned her down due to scheduling conflicts with her students. Mihalyi said if it weren’t for the “coercive powers” of Wilson, she would have said no again.
“I’ve had several conversations with Mihalyi and she is such an interesting person,” Wilson said. “She seems so invested in what she loves and I thought that was really cool. I was hoping she could share some with the students here at Baker.”
Mihalyi said she is doing the speech “out of respect for (Wilson).” Her speech, with a working title of “Passionate Attention,” will be Tuesday in McKibbin Hall.
“Students are in a period where they’re going to be living long lives,” Mihalyi said. “If they don’t find something that doesn’t allow them to put their energy and their heart into it, that will make life harder.”
