The Baker University women’s basketball team picked up its third and fourth wins to improve to 4-1 on the season at the Benedictine Classic Friday and Saturday in Atchinson.
On day one of the tournament, Baker defeated Park University 56-48.
Sophomore Rashida Simpson shot 9 of 10 from the field and scored a season high of 22 points for the Wildcats.
The team as a whole only managed to shoot an average of 41.2 percent from the field, but held the Pirates to 33.9 percent and kept them from making any 3-pointers.
In spite of the 26 turnovers the ‘Cats recorded, they forced 20 turnovers on the Pirates and out-rebounded them 39-37. Simpson boarded the ball seven times, and sophomores Kyrstie Ehm and Haleigh Tenpenny each picked up five rebounds of their own.
Baker came out on top again on day two of the tournament as it pulled out a 76-67 victory over Ottawa University.
Simpson had another big night as she recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Wildcats.
Senior Alisha Fanshier led the team with 20 points and junior Ciarra Washington went 4-for-4 in three-point range and added 15 points of her own.
Baker once again turned the ball over more than its opponent, but managed to out-rebound the Braves 44-33 and held them to a field-goal shooting percentage of 39 percent. The Wildcats also averaged 62.2 percent efficiency from the free throw line on the weekend.
Baker will be on the road again to take on Friends University at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Wichita.<br/>
