The Baker University women’s basketball team took on NCAA Division II Rockhurst University Friday in Kansas City, Mo., in an exhibition game which the Wildcats lost 62-54.
The game did not count toward Baker’s record as it remains 4-2 on the season, but the Hawks improved to 1-1 with the victory.
A jumper by senior Alisha Fanshier put Baker on scoreboard first and gave the ‘Cats a lead which they held until the 12th minute of the first half.
Baker’s biggest lead of the game was by six points. After Rockhurst came from behind to take the lead, it was able to break away and ended the half at 27-19.
The Wildcats came out strong in the second half, though, and went on a 12-2 run to take the lead back and put the score at 31-29. All 12 points during the run came from behind the arc.
Baker only held the lead momentarily as the Hawks took it right back and stayed ahead for the duration of the game.
Junior Ciarra Washington led Baker with 14 points, and she tied her season record of four 3-pointers. Fanshier and senior Sherece Huddlin also racked up double digits for the Wildcats.
Baker was outrebounded by Rockhurst 47-37 and turned the ball over 20 times, compared to the Hawks’ 14 turnovers.
The team shot 35 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw line.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Winfield to take on Southwestern College at 8 p.m.
