After facing the University of Missouri for its first dual of the season, the No. 4 Baker University wrestling team went up against a number of other NCAA Division I and II teams in the Nebraska-Kearney Holiday Inn Open Saturday.
Four Wildcats were in the Elite division brackets of the tournament with junior Joel Olivas competing at 141 pounds, senior Nathan Sommer wrestling at 165 pounds, sophomore Robert Shadrach in the 197-pound weight class and senior Brandon Gebhardt at heavyweight.
Gebhardt led the Wildcats by defeating Bentley Alsup of the Air Force Academy twice, including a pin, on the way to a third-place finish.
While head coach Jimmy May had four wrestlers compete in the Elite division, there were 37 Wildcats who wrestled in the amateur brackets. Out of the 37 wrestlers, senior Jarid Price led the way with a second-place finish in the 184-pound weight class.
Along with Price, freshmen Brando Cunningham and Bo Pursel recorded sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Two of the three wins Cunningham earned came on 5-1 decisions, while the other one he got the 3-2 edge.
Pursel had to wrestle eight matches to get his sixth-place finish in the 141-pound weight class. He started out the day by defeating Drew Peterson of Hastings College 10-0 by major decision. Pursel fell to Konnor Kriss of Colby Community College before winning five straight matches on the back side of the bracket. His win-streak ended when he met Kriss again in the fifth-place matchup, with Pursel losing a 13-6 decision.
The Wildcats will have the Thanksgiving break off before competing in the Kauffman-Brand Open Dec. 1 in St. Louis, Mo.
