The Baker men’s basketball team dropped both of its games in the St. Gregory’s Thanksgiving Classic Friday and Saturday to fall to 6-3 on the season.
The Wildcats’ first loss came at the hands of the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) Friday with the Drovers winning 76-67.
Baker trailed 38-30 at halftime but opened the second half with an 11-2 run to take a 41-40 lead. That would be the only lead the Wildcats would have, though, as USAO responded with a 11-3 spurt and never looked back.
Julian Mills led the Wildcats with a season-high 23 points, but BU did not have an answer for USAO’s Brandon Cutler. Cutler racked up 26 points to lead all scorers as he was 10-22 from the field.
The Drovers and Wildcats struggled from the free-throw line and behind the arc. USAO knocked down two of its 12 3-pointers and went 18-32 from the charity stripe, while the Wildcats hit three of their 15 shots from long distance and made 14 of 23 free throws.
USAO was able to take care of the ball as it had 19 assists to nine turnovers and BU had 12 dimes, but turned the ball over 18 times.
In the Wildcats’ 73-66 loss to St. Gregory’s University Saturday, BU jumped out to a 33-26 lead with 5:30 remaining before halftime, but the Cavaliers buckled down on defense for the rest of the half.
St. Gregory’s closed the half on a 14-0 run to go into the break with a 37-33 advantage.
The Cavaliers pushed its lead to 57-43 with just more than 10 minutes to play, but the Wildcats clawed back into it late.
A 3-pointer by sophomore Chris Lockhart with 4:56 to go pulled the Wildcats within four points of St. Gregory’s as they trailed 63-59.
However, Fayzon Richey answered on the Cavaliers’ next possession with one of his five 3-pointers to extend the lead back to 66-59.
Richey led all scorers with 30 points in the contest and also had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats had three players score in double figures with senior Ben Steinlage leading the way with 18 points.
Baker will look to bounce back from the two losses as it begins conference play at Avila University at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Kansas City, Mo.
