The visiting Baker University men’s basketball team came within seconds of handing Culver-Stockton College its first loss in conference play Saturday, but James Johnson nailed a 3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in regulation and C-SC prevailed 88-75 in overtime.
Baker led 63-56 with 3:45 remaining in regulation, but Culver-Stockton went on an 8-1 run to close out the second half and force overtime.
Culver-Stockton carried its momentum into overtime and outscored BU 24-11 in the extra period after shooting 7-10 from the field and 9-10 from the free-throw line.
Senior Ben Steinlage led the way for BU with a double-double by scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior Chris Lockhart and senior Jordan Honore joined Steinlage in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The loss dropped Baker to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while C-SC improved to 14-3 on the regular season and a perfect 5-0 in conference play.
BU will try to get back to .500 in the HAAC against No. 13 MidAmerica Nazarene University Thursday. Tipoff between the Pioneers is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Collins Center.
