Even with a limited squad competing, the Baker University track and field teams continued to make their presence known Friday as three athletes posted first-place finishes during the Dave Burgess Invitational at Johnson County Community College.
During her first collegiate competition, freshman Danielle French won the women’s high jump by clearing 5 feet 3 inches.
Fellow freshman Dayshawn Berndt followed French by winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.65 seconds. Senior Jeremy Gathright was close behind as the runner-up with a time of 50.66 seconds.
With the performances of juniors Stephanie Nelson and Valerie Schirmer, the ‘Cats were also able to sweep the women’s shot put.
Nelson won the event with a 12.68-meter throw and Schirmer followed with 12.28 meters.
The Wildcats will have a chance to improve on their marks in the ISU Open Friday and Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
