We have talked about invasions in every one of our British studies classes, and today Girl Scout cookies invaded Harlaxton Manor. You could tell how much we miss America by the line that trailed back from that heavenly table.
That’s not to say we were solely motivated by the delicious cookies.Reagan Wallace, our student government president, was kind enough to make a deal with the president of the university that if we bought 200 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, he would dress up as a Girl Scout, skirt and all.
At this moment sales are dying down and we have bought almost 400 boxes of cookies as a student body. Yes, 400 boxes of cookies; that is impressive in itself, but what will be even more impressive is seeing Reagan strut around campus in Girl Scout drag.
On top of it all, another male student made a deal that if 400 boxes were sold, then he would join Reagan in drag. Not the smartest of moves by those two, but definitely gearing up for an entertaining day.
I played my part in the deal by buying two boxes of my favorite cookies, Samoas, because I would have bought them in the United States anyway. As a former Girl Scout, I also got a badge from the England troop when I bought my boxes. Safe to say that this has been a satisfactory afternoon and half a box of cookies has already been digested.
Now to think about the little girls that were selling cookies to all of us American students, we must have looked crazy. They accepted both American dollars and British pounds and were being bombarded by people buying anywhere from a few boxes to whole cases. This had to be the perfect place to sell cookies.
The truth is, the fact that we have been on campus for nearly three weeks has made anything American seem like a commodity, and Girl Scout cookies topped the list. Those were not just a treat; they were a way to remember home and to celebrate where we are.
Now, I personally have never seen a male student dressed up as a girl scout, but I am sure that it will be an interesting experience with pictures soon to follow.
