The Baker University women’s basketball team swept Missouri Valley College in conference play after a 79-65 win over the Vikings on Saturday.
The Wildcats, now 7-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference and 13-8 overall, picked up their third straight conference win with the victory against Missouri Valley, who fell to 6-18 on the season and 3-8 in the HAAC.
Junior point guard BriAnna Garza said that although her team “didn’t really execute a lot on the offensive end,” it played a consistently tough game on the defensive side allowing the Wildcats to stay on top of the Vikings throughout the game.
“Overall, we played well,” Garza said. “We kept a steady lead and never let them get within more than five points. The fact that we can maintain a lead says a lot about how we’ve grown as team.”
Team captain Alisha Fanshier led the team in scoring for the fourth game in a row. The senior racked up 19 points and three assists against the Vikings.
“As a point guard, I have to know my teammates and their strengths and weaknesses,” Garza said. “I know that Alisha is definitely a scorer. I try and get the ball in her hands as much as possible because she knows her role and she plays it well.”
Garza was right behind Fanshier with 14 points and three assists of her own, while sophomore Rashida Simpson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Baker stands alone at third place in the conference and will face Graceland at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lamoni, Iowa. The Yellowjackets are in last place with an 0-11 record in the HAAC. Earlier in the season, the Wildcats defeated Graceland 78-40.
“Our biggest worry is that we are going to go into the game with a big head,” Garza said. “If we’re patient and play good defense while doing all the little things right, it shouldn’t be a tough win again.”
