The outside of Collins Library and the inside of the Ivan L. Boyd Center for Collaborative Science Education were vandalized with graffiti Friday.
Larry Morgan, assistant supervisor of campus safety, indicated the vandalism occurred between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Dean of Students Cassy Bailey said that the Baldwin City Police Department questioned multiple suspects Friday, but no charges were filed.
“The police were investigating last night and they did talk to some suspects,” Bailey said. “Unfortunately, the suspects of which they spoke to, everybody had an alibi that checked out. So we are kind of back to square one on finding out who did it.”
The letters “BL” were spray painted on the eastern and western walls on the outside of Collins Library. Along with the vandalism to the library, a staircase and classroom inside of the Boyd Center also had graffiti.
There were three different areas of the staircase that were spray painted. The phrases “I Smell Pigs,” “Got Bacon?” and “Brotherlands BL” were written in graffiti in the staircase.
Bailey researched “Brotherlands” online Friday after the incident to check if there was any gang affiliation in the area, but did not find anything that would suggest so.
“I googled it last night and there is a band out of Atlanta that is called Brotherlands, but other than that, I have never heard about it,” Bailey said.
Bailey was informed of the vandalism as she was on her way to the Faculty Appreciation Dinner Friday at the DoubleTree hotel in Overland Park.
“I had a chance to share it with (Professor of Biology) Darcy Russell, who was very, very upset by it,” Bailey said. “The thing is that I don’t think it could be any of our students who did it.”
The vandalism occurred the night before prospective Baker students visited campus for Harter Scholarship Day on Saturday. Bailey hoped that the high school students would not be influenced by the graffiti.
“I think it would give the wrong impression to anybody who is visiting the university,” Bailey said. “I would hate for them to think that one of our students would do something like this. (The Boyd Center) is definitely a gem for us and we want to showcase that, so I’m very saddened that people would take the time to vandalize it.”
