The Baker University men’s basketball team could not overcome a 20-point deficit with eight minutes to go as the Wildcats lost to MidAmerica Nazarene University 76-66 Thursday in Olathe.
With the Wildcats trailing 64-44, senior Ben Steinlage scored six consecutive points as part of a 10-0 run to pull BU within 10.
Baker came within seven points on two occasions, but that would be as close as the Wildcats would come to the Pioneers.
Steinlage led all scorers with 24 points as he was seven for 14 from the field and nine for 12 from the charity stripe. Senior Corey Anderson and junior Julian Mills chipped in 10 points apiece to round out the Wildcats in double figures.
The highlight of the night for the Pioneers came when senior Rustin Dowd knocked down a jumper to give him 2,000 points for his career. Dowd and Brandon Newton led the Pioneers with 15 points each.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Wildcats and dropped BU to 14-12 overall and 7-9 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
The Wildcats will have Saturday off, but will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday against Benedictine College for senior night in Collins Center.
